PREMIUM CIGAR GUIDE
What is a premium cigar? All premium cigars are crafted by hand from high-quality, carefully selected tobacco leaves. The best cigars use a blend of different leaves from specific regions known for their superior tobacco, such as Nicaragua , the Dominican Republic , and Honduras .
“The color of the wrapper is largely dependent on the aging process. All tobacco leaves start off green in color and progress through caramel tones to rich chocolatey browns.” Double Claro (Candela): Double Claro leaf is harvested very early in the maturation process. To lock in a significant amount of chlorophyll, a quick drying process is used. This results in a light greenish color with a very mild and somewhat vegetal flavor profile . Claro (Connecticut): A shade-grown leaf with a light tan color exhibiting a very mild flavor that sometimes relies on the flavor of the binder and filler to lead the way. Colorado Claro: A light brown leaf picked after a moderate amount of maturation time that is still quite mild. Colorado: A reddish-brown shade grown leaf . At this stage, the leaf begins to exhibit a slightly robust flavor . This is the exact midway point of the spectrum. Colorado Maduro: A brown colored leaf that as a result of a longer fermentation period, has finally approached a truly robust flavor profile . Maduro: A dark brown leaf that has matured for an extended period of time, resulting in a sweet, very full-flavored, robust profile . Maduros are an extremely popular wrapper type today, especially among non-Cuban cigar varieties. Oscuro: At this stage, the leaf has practically achieved a black color profile . With such extensively prolonged fermentation, Oscuro wrappers are the most robust and full-flavored wrappers in existence. They are sometimes referred to as ‘Negra’ or ‘Double Maduro.’ WRAPPER COLORS
The filler (innermost leaf), binder (middle leaf) and wrapper (outermost leaf).
The Wrapper is the visible outer cover leaf. It’s also the most expensive component per pound, as these tobacco leaves need to be pristine in appearance, as well as flavorful. The Binder can be considered a wrapper leaf that didn’t make the cut. It’s often the same tobacco as the wrapper, only not as smooth in appearance, and it doesn’t have to be—you don’t see it. Binder is the leaf of tobacco directly underneath the wrapper and holds the filler tobacco in place, hence the name. Combustion of the binder is critical, as a good-burning binder will often help the filler to burn more evenly. The Filler is where the cigarmaker can be most creative, as he can use several different types of tobacco from various countries and several different primings of tobacco for desired flavor, strength and complexity. As with the wrapper and binder, these are long filler tobaccos that are put into place to burn slowly yet offer a fine gustatory and aromatic experience.
